MPS Experimenters Self-Instruction Guide MPS-OPM 2.1.1

Version 1.1

This document is available through WWW, as:

http://physgi01.phy.bnl.gov/~mps1/userGuide.html .

This is a self-instruction guide which should be thoroughly read by experimenters and BNL staff who intend to work at the MPS, excluding qualified AGS staff who have their own procedures. This guide combines and supercedes all previous self-instruction guides. Those sections corresponding to previous self-instruction guides concerning the MPS magnet have been brought up to date to reflect lessons learned from the November, 1994 failure of the lower magnet coils. That failure resulted in considerable thought about the magnet and its safe operation, reflected in this new guide.

For additional protection of passers-by, an orange traffic-control fence has been erected around the MPS magnet in January, 1995. This fence restricts entrance into the area of the magnet's fringe field to two points, and an existing door, as well as through the MPS Fast Trailer (T260). Signs have been added which warn more specifically of the hazards associated with the high fringe field (ie, objects being pulled from one's grasp, and credit card erasure). Illuminated signs have been placed at each of the two entrance points, and the existing outside door, which illuminate whenever the magnet is on.

Those sections corresponding to previous self-instruction guides concerning the MPS gas system have been combined, and some additional alarm-response procedures have been added; it also includes some updates by Leigh Hawkins to his addendum.

All experimenters and BNL staff must be knowledgable in all five sections in order to stand watch at the MPS; all sections must be reviewed annually.

After reading, the "MPS Self-Instruction Sign-Off Sheet" should be filled out, signed and returned to R. Hackenburg, BNL, Building 510A. Throughout this guide, the term "knowledgable" shall mean those people who have signed and returned the sign-off sheet with the relevant section initialled, or AGS staff who are exempt by virtue of independent AGS training. Any questions should be directed to R. Hackenburg, x2088 or email to hack@bnl.gov .
